"But I just can't meditate!" My personal story and the 3 reasons that prevented me from meditating

11 years ago, I was super overwhelmed. I was the mother of a newborn and worked full time in a very competitive environment. I wasn’t in the mood to go out with my husband or friends because all my energy was invested in my baby and my work. I remember repeating to myself: "God, Universe, Life, help me to be more balanced, to feel calmer". The more I resisted my feelings, the bigger they got. So I decided to start a transcendental meditation course.

Just remembering it makes me laugh, the only thing that came out of my mouth was "I just can't meditate!" I couldn't get it and on top of that, I’d bought into the story that meditation was for people with a different profile from mine. A couple of years later, I came across Mindfulness and I loved it because it seemed accessible and simple. I started sitting with an app and gradually learned to let go, to have tolerance and self-compassion.

If you feel you can't meditate, you might be trapped in the same loop I was . Let me share with you the three top reasons why I couldn’t meditate and see if they resonate with you:

  1. You try to silence the mind, in fact, you try to make your thoughts disappear. In reality, thoughts are natural and you just need to let them come and go.

  2. You think that you have to sit in a cumbersome way, however, you can be seated in a chair, cross legged on the floor or just lie down on the floor (careful not to fall asleep).

  3. You think meditation is connected with a strange religion, nevertheless, most meditators don’t ascribe it to any creed.

I learned to meditate with the Headspace app. It’s great, clear and offers meditations from the most basic to the most pro. The other multilingual app I discovered is Insight Timer, it includes meditations for children and I really like it.

Start enjoying this daily break, if there is enjoyment you are on the right track.
